The chief use of shepherd's-purse in medicine has been to stop bleeding from internal organs and to control profuse menstruation. Human and test tub studies show that the plant has hemostatic properties - that is, the ability to stop bleeding. The peppery young leaves can be eaten like spinace or used to season stews, and the seeds can be substituted for mustard.
