Hydrastis Canadensis
Goldenseal root is antiseptic and hemostatic (it stops bleeding). It is used in eyewashes and, brewed as a tea, is taken for stomachaches. Formerly prescribed for morning sickness, goldenseal root is very poisonous in large doses. The tea has also been used as a douche for vaginal inflammations.
Do not take goldenseal except under medicinal supervision. The alcaloids that cause this plant's drug action are poisonous in large doses.
