Trillium Erectum

Birthroot remains a popular folk cure for bleeding, snakebite, and skin irritations. Studies indicate that birthroot probably acts as an external astringent and therefore may help external bleeding. No basis has been found to support its use in the erbal medicine as an expectorant or an emmenagogue (to promote menstration). The leaves sometimes serve as a potherb or salad green in Appalachia.
